Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign is continuing to call for former President Donald Trump to have his microphone unmuted at the next debate after the campaign announced it had agreed to keep the rules the same as in the debate with President Joe Biden.
Trump made it clear on Monday that he wanted his microphone to remain on throughout the debate, but that the rules for the debate were already decided when his team agreed to the terms set by the Biden campaign, which included muting microphones when the candidates were not speaking.
“We agreed to the same rules. I don't know, it doesn't matter to me. … The agreement was to make it the same as last time, in which case it was muted. I didn't like it last time, but it worked out. … I think it should be the same. We agreed to the same rules,” Trump said. said on monday.
Blaine Fallon, a senior communications adviser to Harris, posted on X on Thursday that the Harris campaign had again asked ABC News to keep her microphone on and not muted throughout the debate. Fallon misleadingly quoted Trump's comments from Monday out of context, making it seem as if the microphone issues stemmed from the Trump campaign.
“The truth is, they're trying to run away from this. She doesn't want to discuss it.”
“Our latest understanding is that Mr. Trump said he would be comfortable with not muting his microphone on Monday, but his entourage does not believe he will be able to debate VP Harris live and has asked ABC to ignore Mr. Trump's comments and keep his microphone muted or they will withdraw from the third debate. We have been asked to abide by the wishes of Mr. Trump's entourage in this regard in order to maintain the debate. We are in agreement with Mr. Trump's [sic] “The team is taking a weak stance and we are still in discussions with ABC regarding the final rules,” Fallon said.
“The fact is, they're trying to get away from this. She doesn't want to debate. She's not a good debater,” Trump said Monday.
New York Post Reported Other rules and conditions for the debate are as follows:
- No live studio audience.
- No pre-written notes.
- No props;
- Only pen and paper allowed.
- 1 bottle of water.
Harris' campaign had previously said the “debate discussion is over” regarding the number of debates she would take part in, and maintained that she would only take part in two because Biden held his first debate before dropping out of the race.
