Harris Claims She ‘Does Not Support’ Electric Car Mandates After Years of Backing Them

Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign claims she “does not support” an electric vehicle (EV) mandate now, despite her longtime support for one as a senator and in President Joe Biden's administration.

According to audienceAmber Duke, Harris campaign Sent “VP Harris does not support an electric vehicle mandate,” he claimed in an email sent to supporters on Tuesday.

The statement comes after Harris spent years campaigning, promoting and supporting an EV mandate that would require automakers to produce and sell a certain percentage of EVs to American consumers.

For example, last month Breitbart News detailed Harris' 2020 Green New Deal proposal, which aims to phase out the sale of gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035 and require Americans to only buy electric vehicles when purchasing new cars.

“[W]Harris' agenda at the time included “ensuring that 50% of all new passenger cars sold are zero-emission vehicles by 2030, and 100% are zero-emission vehicles by 2035.” Similarly, Harris said he wanted to mandate that “all new buses be zero-emission vehicles by 2030.”

As vice president, Harris supports Biden's EV mandate, which would require the majority of new cars produced and sold in the U.S. market to be electric or hybrid by 2032.

The American Oil and Gas Association slammed Harris in a post on X.

Last month, a Harvard-Harris Poll found that 72% of registered voters opposed a Biden-Harris EV mandate, including 57% of Democrats, 77% of swing voters and 83% of Republicans.

Either EV mandate risks destroying millions of American auto jobs, including those of UAW members, as experts point out that EVs require far less labor to produce than traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.

Former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), have said they would end the EV mandate for Biden and Harris.

“[We will] Ending the electric vehicle mandate from day one would avert the complete death of the U.S. auto industry, which is currently happening, and save American customers thousands of dollars per car.”
