Vice President Harris held a one-point lead over former President Trump in a poll conducted after she accepted the party's presidential nomination at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).
The survey found that: Releasing late Thursday According to a Wall Street Journal poll, Harris has the support of 48 percent of respondents in a binary election, with Trump closely behind at 47 percent.
When third-party candidates are included, Harris still leads Trump with 47% to 45%, according to the survey.
Both comparisons are within the poll's margin of error of 2.5 percentage points, but they mark the first time since April that either Democratic candidate Harris or Biden has a lead over Trump, The Wall Street Journal noted.
The poll also found that voters currently view Harris more favorably than Trump, rating the two candidates equally when it comes to how they will stand up for American workers and bring about change in the country.
The survey also found that Harris is narrowing the lead Trump once held over Biden on the economy.
And Democrats who once worried about Harris being a lesser known candidate compared to Biden may no longer be as worried: About 84% of respondents said they know enough about Harris' record and policy positions to form an opinion.
Forty-nine percent of respondents had a favorable view of Harris, while the same number had an unfavorable view. This marks a significant change from a July Wall Street Journal poll in which unfavorable views of Harris outnumbered favorable views by 23 percentage points, the paper reported.
The Wall Street Journal suggested that Harris' role in a Biden administration could be separate from her role in leading the Democratic campaign. Though Harris is viewed more favorably as the party's leading candidate, she still has an approval rating of 42 percent as vice president.
“Voters are evaluating her approval of the job she's doing as Biden's vice president, but they're also evaluating her as a presidential candidate,” said Michael Bossian, a Democratic pollster who worked on the survey. “She's been successful as a candidate.”
Other polls have shown Harris narrowing Trump's lead and overtaking or on par with the former president nationally.
According to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, Harris is leading Trump by 3.9 percentage points (49 percent to 45.1 percent).
The Wall Street Journal poll was conducted Aug. 24-28 among 1,500 voters and has a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.
