Harris’ favorability sees dramatic spike after Biden drops out: Poll

A new poll shows that American voters’ favorability ratings for Vice President Kamala Harris have risen dramatically since President Biden dropped out of the race.

According to an ABC News/Ipsos poll conducted Friday and Saturday, Vice President Harris’ overall favorability rating has increased from 35% to 43% since a week ago, while her unpopularity rating has fallen from 46% to 42%.

The poll came just a week after Biden decided to drop out of the 2024 presidential race and endorse Harris, who quickly solidified support among her fellow Democrats and effectively clinched the nomination by the middle of last week.

The news created a frenzy among Democrats, who donated record amounts of money to her campaign after she emerged as the top candidate, and that enthusiasm was reflected in new polls.

Among Democrats, 88% said they were enthusiastic about Harris being the party’s nominee (63% said they were very enthusiastic and 25% said they were somewhat enthusiastic). The party’s enthusiasm for Harris exceeded that of Republicans for former President Trump, with 82% of respondents saying they were enthusiastic about her being the nominee.

President Trump’s favorable rating has also fallen from 40% last week to 36% in the latest poll, while his disapproval rating has also risen slightly in the latest poll, from 51% to 52%.

The poll also looked at the ongoing “vice presidential election,” in which Harris has yet to choose a running mate. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg (54%) and California Governor Gavin Newsom (54%) were most well-known among respondents, but candidates such as Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) (22% favorability) and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (17% favorability) were most favorable among those who knew them.
