Harris leading Trump in New Hampshire by 4 points: Survey

A poll released Wednesday showed Vice President Harris leading former President Trump by four points in New Hampshire, marking the latest good news for Harris since she became a leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Emerson University Opinion Poll/WHDH Survey The poll found that 50 percent of New Hampshire voters supported Harris, while 46 percent chose the former president.

According to the poll, 4% of voters were undecided, but when asked which candidate they were leaning to, support for Harris rose to 52% and support for Trump rose to 48%.

When third-party presidential candidates are in the mix, Harris beat Trump by seven points (48% to 41%), compared with 6% who chose independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and 1% who chose Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein.

The results mark a shift from the small lead Trump held over Biden in New Jersey earlier this month after Biden’s poor performance in the debate.

Biden won New Hampshire in 2020, but Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton won the state in 2016.

Amid growing pressure from some Democrats to drop out of the race after his poor performance in the debates and falling support in the polls, Biden announced last week that he would not seek reelection and endorsed Harris as his successor.

Harris’ arrival and Biden’s exit have rapidly changed the complexion of the race, with some polls showing a close race between the vice president and Trump.

Wednesday’s poll showed Harris performing better against Trump than Biden did last year, just months before the debate.

“Harris is Biden’sNovember“In the 2023 election poll, approval of Trump has increased by three points, from 47% to 50%, while his approval has similarly increased by four points, from 42% to 46%, in the poll’s results,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of the Emerson College Poll, said in a statement.

“Harris is well ahead of Biden in polling with independents. In November, Biden led Trump by three points, 40 percent to 37 percent, but Harris now leads by seven points, 48 percent to 41 percent,” Kimball added.

Kimball noted that Harris has seen an uptick in support among young people compared to Biden’s previous numbers: Harris holds a 17-point lead among independent voters under 30, while Biden held a 4-point lead with that demographic last November.

More than half of Granite State voters, 53 percent, say they are dissatisfied with the job Biden is doing in office, while 39 percent approve.

The race between Harris and Trump remains close at the national level, with Trump leading Harris by 1.7 percentage points as of Wednesday in a Decision Desk HQ/The Hill poll.

The Emerson College Poll/WHDH survey was conducted July 26-28 among 1,000 registered New Hampshire voters.

The poll’s reliability is similar to the poll’s margin of error, which is plus or minus 3 percentage points for the sample in 19 of 20 states, while the confidence interval for the sample of 433 Democratic primary voters and 421 Republican primary voters is plus or minus 4.7 percentage points.
