Harris’ Oprah Event Is ‘Part of a Strategy’ to Dodge Interviews

On Thursday's “CNN Newsnight” broadcast, host Abby Phillips said the event with Oprah Winfrey and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris was “part of a strategy being put forward by the Harris campaign to avoid interviews as much as possible,” because Harris doesn't always perform well in interviews.

“These events are part of a strategy the Harris campaign is embarking on to avoid interviews as much as possible – not necessarily where Harris can shine. So instead they're doing things like this, which is very unusual for Harris. Will it work? Will it be enough? There are less than 50 days until the next election,” Phillips said.

Later, after podcast co-host Van Lathan said that the Oprah event was Harris' “home game” and that voters would want to see her respond to questions, Phillips agreed that voters would want her to respond, saying, “I think that's a really important point, because we don't necessarily need this mentality that Harris has to fill in every single policy gap. In fact, she needs to be the same person in other settings that she is when she's with Oprah.”
