The largest socialist group in the US has welcomed Vice President Kamala Harris’ choice of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) as her running mate for 2024, saying it shows socialists and the left are a “force to be reckoned with.”
“Harris’ selection of Waltz as her running mate shows the world that DSA and our left-leaning allies are a force to be reckoned with,” the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) boasted on X.
The “Uncommitted” movement, in which DSA members played a key role nationally and in several states, pressured the Democratic establishment to select a new candidate and to withdraw a running mate who had direct ties to the IDF and would have been a staunch supporter of the IDF.

“Through collective action, DSA and the American left more broadly have made it clear that change is needed. DSA members have organized in workplaces and unions, and realigned the labor movement in support of Palestinian liberation,” the group added, referring to the selection.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (Democrat) was seen as the leading candidate, but his selection would have angered progressives because of his support for Israel.
The socialist organization, which supported the election of far-left Squad member Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York), is protesting Israel’s military action against Hamas after the Palestinian terrorist group carried out an attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, that left around 1,200 people dead, including many women, children and elderly people.
Referring to Shapiro, the DSA said the group “pressurized the Democratic establishment to select a new candidate. It also cited the Uncommitted Movement, a progressive-backed movement that is pressuring President Joe Biden to end support for the country’s conflict with Israel by withholding votes in 2024.”

“The Uncommitted Movement, in which DSA members played a key role nationally and in multiple states, pressured the Democratic Party establishment to select a new candidate and to withdraw from a running mate who had direct ties to the Israel Defense Forces and would have vehemently supported the ongoing genocide in Palestine,” DSA posted.
Finally, the group posted, “Our demands remain unchanged: Harris must call for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and implement all arms embargoes to Israel.”
“Democrat politics have not changed, but millions of Americans now want the President to do better on issues like Palestine. We are raising our expectations and will not rest until the genocide ends and all our people are free,” the statement said.
