Harris sees jump in favorability since Biden's exit: Poll

A new poll conducted about a week after President Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and Harris emerged as his potential successor shows that Vice President Harris’s favorability among Americans is rising.

In ABC News/Ipsos PollThe poll released Sunday found that 43% of Americans say they have a favorable view of Harris, up 8 points from last week’s 35% favorable rating.

Vice President Harris’ disapproval rating also improved from last week’s poll, with 42% of Americans now having an unfavorable view of her, down 4 points from 46% last week.

Harris’ positive net favorability rating of one point puts her ahead of Biden, who has a negative favorability rating of -13 points, and Trump, who has a negative approval rating of -16 points.

Biden’s favorable rating rose to 37%, up from 32% last week, a statistically significant 5-point increase, while his unfavorable rating also fell 5 points, from 55% last week to 50% this week.

President Trump’s favorable rating has dipped slightly since rising nine points from 31 percent to 40 percent last week after the assassination attempt. This week, his favorable rating is at 36 percent and his unfavorable rating is 52 percent.

The new figures are in line with similar polls and suggest that Harris’ support has risen since she came into the spotlight as the party’s presumptive nominee.

In this latest poll, 88 percent of Democrats say they are very (63 percent) or somewhat (25 percent) enthusiastic about Harris being their party’s nominee. Among independents, 49 percent say they are very (24 percent) or somewhat (25 percent) enthusiastic about Harris being their party’s nominee.

According to The Hill/Decision Desk national polling average, Harris’s favorability rating is 44.1 percent, a slight improvement from her 41.9 percent average on July 20, the day before Biden dropped out of the race.

The poll was conducted July 26-27, 2024, among 1,200 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
