Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate for the White House in 2024, exactly four years to the week since President Joe Biden selected her as his running mate.

The announcement is reportedly due to be made in the presence of supporters ahead of the new members’ first appearance together at a campaign event in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. CNN.

Members of Harris’ team were dispatched to the Minnesota Governor’s Mansion to inform the governor and then accompanied him to Philadelphia for the rally.

according to CNNHarris grew increasingly close to Waltz during the final days of the vetting process and was impressed with his “happy-go-lucky” attitude.

Harris’ selection comes as Democrats scrambled to install her as their potential successor after Biden suspended his reelection campaign amid pressure from colleagues to step down, citing his age, mental health and chances of beating former President Donald Trump.

Walz served in the Army National Guard for 24 years and then served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 10 years before running for governor in 2018.

When the news broke, conservatives argued that this would be the nomination of the most radical far-left candidate in American history.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, called the selection “the most left-wing nominee in American history” and said Walz had not done enough to stop the unrest and violence surrounding the 2020 killing of George Floyd.

“Walz stood by and watched Minneapolis burn,” DeSantis said.

Meanwhile, Gov. Walz received backlash from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who said the governor took too long to send in the National Guard to stop riots in the city that have caused more than $500 million in damage and looting.

Walz’s critics are also quick to point out that one of his first official moves as governor was to launch a statewide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Commission, which he continued after his reelection.

Harris and Walz are scheduled to leave Philadelphia on Tuesday night to begin a five-day tour of seven battleground states.

“In addition to holding rallies at each stop on the tour, the vice president and her running mate will also take time to meet with voters in smaller, more intimate locations, including union halls, family-owned restaurants and campaign offices, in a variety of venues from large arenas to college campuses and HBCUs,” Harris campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt said in a statement. “These stops will highlight the candidates’ strengths in the Blue Wall and Sun Belt, from urban to rural areas. At each stop, our new running mate will be joined by local elected officials, union members, faith leaders and more.”

Harris formally won the Democratic presidential nomination on Monday night after receiving the support of 99 percent of delegates to the Democratic National Convention over five days of online voting.

They will be accompanied on the tour by Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Trump’s running mate.

Walz could face Vance in a debate, though a date has yet to be set.
