Harris, Trump neck and neck in new poll taken after Biden exit

A new presidential poll released on Tuesday showed former President Trump leading Vice President Harris by just one point, suggesting the race remains close despite the Democrats’ change of lead candidate.

of Marist Poll The NPR/PBS poll found Trump’s approval rating at 46 percent nationwide, Harris’s at 45 percent, and about 9 percent of respondents undecided. When third-party candidates are included, the support for the two candidates is tied.

“When you look at the top lines after everything that’s happened this month, the presidential races all look very similar, even though the names have changed,” Marist College polling director Lee Miringoff said in a statement. “But when you look more closely at the numbers, a different story emerges, with many more voters undecided and others potentially reconsidering their choice.”

The poll found that 21% of independents were undecided, while those who voted had decided to support Trump over Harris by 46% to 32%.

Harris, who effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination on Monday with the support of a majority of the party’s delegates, has raised more than $80 million in 24 hours since entering the race following Biden’s withdrawal on Monday, the highest fundraising period in the history of a presidential campaign.

Nearly 90% of respondents agreed that Biden’s decision to drop out of the race was the right one, and 41% of respondents (65% of Democrats) said the move would improve the party’s chances of winning the November election.

The change in candidates could also affect voter turnout, with just over a third of respondents saying they were more likely to vote, and 6% saying they were less likely to vote.

The last Marist Poll had Biden ahead of Trump by 2 percentage points. All polls in this race are within the margin of error.

The poll was conducted Monday among about 1,300 adults and had a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.
