Harris, Trump neck and neck nationally in new poll

Vice President Harris and former President Trump Separate each point According to a new New York Times/Siena College poll.

Public Opinion PollThe poll, conducted Sept. 3-6, showed 47% of likely voters supporting Harris, while 48% of likely voters supported Trump.

Harris and Trump are scheduled to debate Tuesday night, the second presidential debate this year, following Biden and former President Trump's debate in June. Biden's debate performance raised concerns within his party about his age, mental health and ability to retake the White House. He subsequently withdrew from the 2024 presidential race and endorsed the vice president.

The Times/Siena poll also found that while 30% of voters believe “the United States is moving in the right direction,” 60% disagree.

The vice president leads the former president by 3.8 percentage points, according to The Hill/Decision Desk average of national polls, with Trump's approval rating at 45.7 percent and Harris's at 49.5 percent.

But Harris faces tough challenges in battleground states like Georgia and Arizona, where The Hill/Decision Desk averages of polls show her tied with Trump in the Peach State and Grand Canyon State, each with a 0.4 percentage point lead.

The Times/Siena poll included 1,695 registered voters and had a sampling error of 2.8 percentage points.
