Harris ‘Was Joking’ About Shooting an Intruder

During Friday's broadcast of CNN's “The Lead,” Keisha Lance Bottoms, a senior adviser to the Harris-Waltz campaign, said Vice President Kamala Harris, a potential 2024 Democratic presidential candidate, was just joking when she spoke about shooting someone who broke into her home. “But I think it's important for people to know that the vice president respects the right to bear arms, supports the Second Amendment, wants responsible gun ownership, and wants communities to be safe.”

Host Jake Tapper played a video of Harris saying, “If someone comes into my house, I'm going to shoot them. I probably shouldn't have said that. My staff will deal with that later.”

Tapper then asked, “Do you think she said, maybe I shouldn't have said that, she shouldn't have said that?”

Bottoms responded, “She was joking. And, of course, the vice president does multiple interviews and she knows she's going to be criticized for everything she says. So it was a joke and she knew we're still going to talk about it. But I think it's important for people to know that the vice president respects gun rights, supports the Second Amendment, wants responsible gun ownership, wants our communities to be safe. So it was a joke that we still talk about. But again, I think it speaks to the humanity of the vice president.”
