Harrison Mevis’ inappropriate postgame interview leaves NBC puzzled

Caleb Williams pulled off an incredible touchdown to close out regulation, but then NBC faced a hiccup with the audio during a postgame interview that left viewers a bit puzzled.

After nailing a 42-yard field goal in overtime on Sunday, which propelled the Rams into the NFC Championship Game, kicker Harrison Mavis spoke with quarterback Matthew Stafford in an NBC interview hosted by Melissa Stark.

Stark, who called Mavis the “thicker kicker” due to his size, inquired about dealing with the cold and snow while making field goals. However, his response left some people scratching their heads.

“I mean…” Mavis started, but then his voice became jumbled, making it tough to follow what he was saying.

Once the audio sorted itself out, he added, “Shoot, that’s why we do it.”

Social media lit up with confusion, with one user humorously suggesting that Mavis “was speaking Russian.”

Another user attempted to mimic Mavis’ garbled answer, posting a series of nonsensical sounds as a joke.

It seems Mavis might have said something inappropriate to kick off the interview, which prompted the network to scramble the audio. He did seem to shift to “shoot” later on, which was clearer.

Despite the technical difficulties, Mavis celebrated the most significant kick of his career, helping LA secure a 20-17 victory and a spot in the NFC Championship against the Seahawks, who toppled the 49ers the day before.

At just 23, Mavis started the season on the Jets’ roster but was waived mid-September after completing 3 of 4 field goals during preseason. He briefly joined their practice squad before finding a new home with the Rams last November.

Mavis, who played for the Birmingham Stallions in the United Football League last season, made an impressive 20 of 21 field goals during that time. In his nine games with the Rams, this 6-foot, 245-pound kicker has successfully made 12 of 13 field goals.
