Harrison Phillips Prepares for His Jets Debut Against the Steelers
While the Jets have been focused on their upcoming game against the Steelers since the schedule dropped in May, Harrison Phillips has had his sights set on facing the Bears as a member of the Vikings. But a trade on August 20th changed that.
Now, as a defensive tackle for the Jets, Phillips has been adapting quickly to their defensive schemes, and he is expected to contribute significantly alongside Quinnen Williams this Sunday.
Reflecting on his adjustment, Phillips described it as a blend of learning through experience, like “baptism by fire,” paired with feeling a bit like he’s back on a bike after a long time. “There’s a lot of new terminology and different strategies involved,” he said. “Yet, it reminds me a lot of the defense I played in Buffalo a few years back. It’s fascinating to see how well we come together as a unit early in the season, which I think is essential.”
Defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes acknowledged that Phillips has seamlessly integrated into the team. “Honestly, it doesn’t seem like he just arrived,” Wilkes noted. “He’s made adjustments based on the different looks we see, almost like he’s been here longer than a few days. Coach Cameron Davis has done an excellent job helping him get a handle on the plays, and he’s proving to be a smart, seasoned player.”
Wilkes further emphasized how Phillips brings a new dynamic to the Jets’ defensive line. “He infuses physicality and toughness. Having someone like him team up with Quinnen really enhances what we can do,” he said.
In other news, the Jets have promoted WR Tyler Johnson from the practice squad for this week’s game, while RG Alijah Vera-Tucker has been placed on injured reserve.
Meanwhile, the Steelers have reached a contract modification with team captain Cam Hayward that includes over $3 million in incentives, bumping up his previous deal of $14.75 million to ensure he’s ready for the Sunday match.
