Harry Kane clarifies the reasons he and Erling Haaland are not comparable

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — England striker Harry Kane believes that despite both being top scorers and playing in the same position, his style is very different from Erling Haaland’s, making comparisons between them difficult.

When asked about Norway’s standout players ahead of their World Cup quarter-final match, Kane remarked, “Honestly, while we’re both labelled as strikers, our roles are quite distinct.” He went on to praise Haaland, calling him “unbelievable” and emphasizing his physical prowess and impressive scoring record.

“I see myself as a different kind of player. Sure, I score similar goals, but I prefer to get more involved in the play and touch the ball more often. Of course, I can also play as a classic No. 9. Comparing us is unnecessary. I respect him greatly as a player and as a professional,” Kane added.

This sentiment naturally leads to a major question for England as they prepare to face Norway: how do they contain Haaland effectively?

Addressing this challenge may involve focusing not just on Haaland, but also on his teammates, as he can be highly effective even with limited touches, depending on quality service. England’s defense might need to bolster itself with tall players like John Stones or Dan Byrne, who both performed well as substitutes in earlier rounds. Key Norwegian players such as Martin Odegaard, Sander Berge, and Alexander Sorloth could also be crucial to Thomas Tuchel’s strategy.

“They’re a really dangerous team,” Kane noted, acknowledging their skillful players. “They’re well-coached both with and without the ball. It’s our responsibility to identify their weaknesses. We aim to impose our game, but we know we’re up against a team loaded with talent, all riding high on confidence right now.”

In other updates, Kane mentioned a previous encounter with former President Donald Trump, recalling a surreal golf outing they shared in Palm Beach about a year and a half ago. “It was a unique experience meeting him. He’s actually a really skilled golfer. I aspire to improve my game to that level one day,” Kane reflected.

Regarding England’s training, Mark Gehi (hamstring), Declan Rice (illness), and Reece James (hamstring) participated, while Jordan Henderson, sidelined due to arm surgery following a celebration injury, was the only player absent.

Tuchel also noted that he had not yet received any explanation from FIFA concerning the lengthening of Jarrell Quansah’s suspension from one match to two after receiving a red card.
