Harry Styles dedicated a new song to his late One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne, during a concert at Madison Square Garden, marking two years since Payne’s untimely passing.
During his concert on Friday, part of a 30-show series in New York City, Styles shared that he had composed the song, named “What Is Enough,” in the aftermath of Payne’s death in 2024, as noted in a video circulating on social media.
Styles, now 32, expressed his appreciation for performing in such a significant venue, stating, “I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me. And I feel incredibly proud when I get to look up there and see my name up there,” before unveiling the previously unheard track.
The singer reflected on the impact of his former bandmate’s loss on his life, remarking, “There are so many people in my life, friends and people [who] I’ve worked with, that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without.”
“And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends,” he added.
Payne, who was only 31, died on October 16, 2024, after a fall from the third floor of his hotel room in Argentina, resulting in severe injuries, including significant internal and external bleeding.
He then pointed out a banner inside Madison Square Garden commemorating his previous 15 consecutive performances there.
“There’s so many more people behind it, so many people [who] have touched my life in such special ways. I wouldn’t be here without them,” he said before launching into the song he dedicated to his late friend.
Shortly after Payne’s death, Styles and his fellow bandmates, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan, expressed their grief in a joint statement, acknowledging the profound loss of their friend during his funeral in the UK, which marked their first gathering in nearly nine years.
“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing,” their statement read. They mentioned that they would need time to grieve and process the loss of someone they considered a brother, whose memories they would cherish forever.
Styles also shared a personal message on Instagram following Payne’s death, revealing that he was “truly devastated” and reflecting on how much joy Payne brought to others. He described Payne as someone who lived openly and had a contagious passion for life, noting, “The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life.”
In a recent interview with Apple Music, Styles discussed the “difficult” nature of losing Payne. He mentioned struggling with the idea of others sharing in his grief, saying, “It’s so difficult to lose a friend, especially someone who is so like you in so many ways.”
