Chris Hansen, host To catch a predator, He said he was opposed to chemical castration of sex offenders and would prefer that those arrested for sexual abuse undergo “treatment” instead.
The TV presenter TMZ Concerns about recent legislation passed it Louisiana passed a bill giving judges the authority to sentence sex offenders to medical castration.
Hansen said he has eradicated many predators, but feels castration may not eliminate all predators that are sociopathic.
Moreover, he’s not even sure whether castration would be reviewable in court.
The TV presenter, who has no law degree or legal training, said he thinks tougher prison sentences and a regime of psychological treatment might be a better policy.
In fact, he believes many of the predators he encounters on his TV show acted out because they couldn’t get treatment.
“I hear on my podcast that sexual abusers that I’ve caught contact me and say they’re attracted to children but they don’t act on them because they have access to therapy,” he told TMZ. “They know it’s wrong to act on them, but because of the therapy, because of their determination not to hurt the other person, they don’t act on them.”
He also questioned whether probation and registering as a sex offender would be enough to deter future crimes: he seemed unconvinced that it would be enough, but did not speculate further.
