Department of Defense All-Spectrum Anomaly Resolution Agency
Define What is an “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomenon” (UAP):
(A) an airborne object that is not readily identifiable; (B) an object or device that crosses a medium; or (C) an underwater object or device that is not readily identifiable but that exhibits operating or performance characteristics that suggest it may be associated with an object or device described in subparagraph (A) or (B).
The Department of Defense considers UAPs to be “a source of anomalous detections in one or more areas that have not yet been attributed to a known actor and exhibit behavior not readily understood by sensors or observers.”
The prevailing hypotheses for these phenomena are either that they are the work of extraterrestrials from distant worlds or civilizations, or that they are simply human creations.
The paper is scheduled to be published in the journal Philosophy and Cosmology.
Recommendation Scientists remain open to a third possibility: that UAPs could be the product of non-human intelligent beings (NHIs) “lurking on Earth (e.g., underground) or nearby (e.g., the Moon), or walking among us ‘pretending to be human.'”
In other words, scholars are considering the possibility that flying saucers are not the work of little green men from Mars, but rather “crypto-Earthlings” such as lizard-men, stranded aliens, fairies, advanced cave dwellers, or inhabitants of the dark side of the moon.
According to Tim Lomas and Brendan Case of the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University, and biological anthropologist Michael Masters of Montana Tech, scientists shouldn’t completely dismiss the “extraterrestrial” hypothesis (CTH).
“We recognize that these CTHs may understandably be viewed with skepticism by most scientists, but we nevertheless argue that they should not be rejected and deserve to be considered with epistemic humility and an open mind,” they write.
The three said they wanted to pursue the topic after philosopher Bernard Kastrup recently dismissed the hypothesis, calling it “outlandish, unlikely and of a ‘bizarre’ nature.”
Their paper is a diverse collection of local myths, purported archaeological finds, anecdotes from believers, questions raised by lawmakers, science fiction, and statements from military officials, and lists five considerations: the limitations of historical and geological knowledge, traces of lost civilizations, purported traces of underground civilizations, traditions surrounding “magical” hidden Earth life forms, and UAP activity underground, under the sea and near the Moon.
“We would personally assess the likelihood that CTH had some basis in truth at around 1%.”
The researchers are the first to emphasize that this particular theory differs from the notion that UAPs are the product of extra-dimensional beings. Instead, the so-called hidden Earthlings are understood to physically exist within our current standard space-time dimension, even if they are “hidden” from view.
It seems that “dinosaur-like creatures” are also included as candidates for hidden terrestrial organisms.
“Legends of anthropomorphic reptilian races exist in all cultures, such as the Nagas, a semi-divine race of half-man, half-snake beings believed to reside in Patala (the underworld) worshipped in Hinduism and Buddhism. Moreover, paleontologists have even speculated that such creatures may have evolved from known zoological origins,” the Harvard researchers write.
The researchers cited a theory that an anthropomorphic dinosaur called Troodon survived a mass extinction 65 million years ago and is now lurking underground. They suggested that Troodon or “other land animals that evolved to live in hiding” could be what former CIA agent John Ramirez believes to be “crawling around the Earth” with the knowledge of the U.S. government, particularly the National Reconnaissance Office.
Noting the lack of visible means of propulsion or exhaust sources seen in various sightings, the researchers raised the possibility, though not definitively, that the Hidden Earth Beings could be angels or magical creatures such as “fairies, elves, gnomes, brownies, trolls, etc.”
If they’re not lizardmen or fairies, then there are two other possibilities, according to the paper: they could be remnants of a lost human civilization, or “extraterrestrials or our trans-temporal descendants who ‘arrived’ on Earth from somewhere in space or from humanity’s future, respectively, and went into hiding.”
The paper was published online a year after Gallup’s report.
Revealed The report, which said Americans’ confidence in higher education has fallen to 36%, also pointed to Antarctica, Dulce, New Mexico, the deep sea and the dark side of the moon as prime locations where the NHI is said to be hiding. Volcanoes such as Popocatepetl in central Mexico also seem like possible home bases, if not gateways.
In their conclusion, the researchers acknowledge that all four hypotheses are “at first glance far-fetched; some aspects of UAP are sufficiently bizarre to require unconventional explanations, which we consider here.”
The three said that in previous years they “personally estimated the likelihood that CTH was based on some truth at about 1%” but now put the probability at about 10%.
“Certainly, this is an apt summary of CTH. Although highly unlikely, we hope that this paper has demonstrated that it should nevertheless remain a topic of consideration as we seek to unravel the ongoing experimental mystery of UAP,” the researchers continue. “This point is further illustrated, for example, by a recent article in Scientific American titled “It’s time to listen to social scientists about UFOs”
The paper has been accepted for publication but has not yet been peer reviewed.
