Harvey Weinstein was hospitalized for a series of tests after returning to New York’s Rikers Island prison ahead of his court appearance next week.

The 72-year-old was examined by doctors at Rikers and then taken to Manhattan’s Bellevue Hospital for more comprehensive tests, his attorney Arthur Aidala said.

Aidala said Weinstein appeared to be “physically needing a lot of help.”

“He has a lot of problems,” Aidala said. “He’s been undergoing all kinds of tests. He’s a bit of a train wreck health-wise.”

He was transferred from the Mohawk Correctional Facility to the medical ward at Rikers in New York City on Friday.

He will appear before a judge after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned by the New York Supreme Court.

Weinstein was convicted in 2006 of forcing oral sex on a television and film production assistant and of third-degree rape in a 2013 attack on an aspiring actress, and spent 23 years in Mohawk prison. He was serving a sentence for.

The New York Court of Appeals concluded on Thursday that the judge in the historic #MeToo trial unfairly tried former movie mogul Weinstein by making the wrong decision to allow a woman to testify about the allegations. In a shocking 4-3 vote, Stein’s conviction was overturned. It was unrelated to the incident.

The judge “wrongly admitted testimony about past sexual activity that was not indicted,” and said “the testimony served no serious purpose other than his sexual proclivities.”

Weinstein was convicted of rape in Los Angeles in 2022 and remained in prison despite the conviction being overturned. In this case, he was acquitted of sexual assault charges. Mr. Weinstein also filed a notice of appeal against the decision.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said Thursday that it is “committed to retrying this case and continuing our unwavering commitment to victims of sexual assault.”

The district attorney’s office updated its statement Friday, saying its goal is to “center the experiences and well-being of survivors in every decision we make, and we intend to do so as we move forward with the next steps in this case.” ” he said.

Judge Curtis Farber is scheduled to hear his case in Manhattan Criminal Court on Wednesday at 2:15 p.m.
