Retrial of Harvey Weinstein’s Sex Crimes Concludes with Deadlocked Jury
The retrial concerning Harvey Weinstein’s sexual offenses came to a close this Thursday with a Manhattan Supreme Court judge announcing a deadlock on one of the charges involving third-degree rape.
Judge Curtis Farber stated that the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict regarding past events with former actress Jessica Mann in a Midtown hotel room. This deliberation dates back to 2013.
“I understand that sometimes the deliberations can really heat up, and this one seems particularly complex,” Farber remarked to the jurors before declaring the lack of a verdict.
On Thursday morning, the judge asked the jury foreperson if there was any willingness to continue discussions after they had halted on Wednesday. “No, sorry,” was the response.
Recently, accusations arose about “playground” bullying taking place during jury discussions. A juror openly shared this with others, which seemed to affect the dynamics of the group.
Despite these issues, Weinstein, who was seen in a black wheelchair, clapped when the jurors decided against resuming deliberations.
Weinstein had been previously convicted of crimes related to the assault of former television production assistant Miriam “Mimi” Haley in 2006. Meanwhile, jurors acquitted him of allegedly raping former Polish model Kaja Sokola, who testified about being forced into oral sex at a hotel in Tribeca.
During one of the trial’s more emotional moments, Weinstein appeared visibly upset while discussing the allegations, only to later discover evidence concerning medication used for erectile dysfunction in the trash, which led to further charges against him for allegedly assaulting Mann.
