Controversy Erupts Over Hasan Piker’s Speech and Costume Choice

Over the weekend, far-left influencer Hasan Piker stirred significant controversy when he delivered a speech to university students while dressed in attire reminiscent of former communist leader Mao Zedong.

At the 2026 National College Democratic Party Summer Convention, Piker declared, “No more Trumpism, but no more Democrats who compromise, placate, and betray,” which drew applause from the crowd. Clips of his speech quickly spread across social media, particularly one mentioning “Hitler style speech,” which garnered over a million views.

He further stated, “No more for the fascist reactionaries, but no more for the Democrats who collaborate with fascists, fund ICE, fund Israel, help pollute the planet, stiffen workers, and help the bosses.” This comment, along with his Mao-inspired outfit, ignited a wave of backlash online.

Several critics voiced their outrage, including former Los Angeles mayoral candidate and reality TV personality Spencer Pratt, who remarked that Piker was essentially “dressing up as Mao Zedong and brainwashing kids in college.” He emphasized Mao’s bloody history, contrasting it with reactions one might expect if a public figure donned Nazi attire.

Republican strategist Matt Whitlock added, “Can we all agree that wearing a Mao Zedong costume while preaching cosplay communism in this faculty lounge is a little on the nose, right?”

Others, like Ahmed Fuad Al-Khatib from the Atlantic Council, commented on Piker’s apparent shift toward a more extreme leftism, implying that he may be usurping the cultural space of the Democratic Party.

Moreover, CNN political commentator Scott Jennings observed the lengths one must go to be considered respectable on the left, finding it rather amusing.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the anti-Semitism watchdog group Canary Mission criticized Piker as a “malignant figure,” highlighting his support for extremism and raising concerns about his influence within the Democratic Party.

Piker, who has openly praised Mao Zedong, reminded viewers that he has never criticized the leader, whom he referred to as “one of the great leaders of this world.” His introspection seems at odds with the reception he faces from many quarters.
