Hasan Piker: Lugi Took Brian Thompson's Life Because He Committed 'Social Murder'

Backlash Over Claims of “Social Murder”

Hasan Piker ignited controversy on Wednesday by suggesting that Luigi Mangione engaged in “social murder” when he allegedly killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

The Twitch streamer argued that many Americans can relate to the situation, highlighting how Mangione’s actions were connected to the CEO’s role in causing widespread suffering through the healthcare system. Piker referenced Friedrich Engels’ concept of social murder during a podcast interview.

“Americans tend to be very clear about crime and punishment, seeing issues in black and white,” Piker noted. “Yet, with the extensive pain caused by private healthcare, many people quickly grasped why this incident might have occurred.” He pointed out that the burden of medical expenses has become a common struggle, with virtually every American experiencing similar frustrations when dealing with their healthcare providers.

“For a lot of people, it’s a distressing ordeal. To them, it feels like murder—or torture. This might explain why younger generations haven’t reacted as negatively to Mangione’s actions,” he added.

Mangione is facing accusations of murdering Thompson in New York City in 2024, and since then, he has become a prominent figure on the left. In fact, journalist Taylor Lorenz previously described Mangione as a “morally good man” in light of his alleged actions.

“Finding someone who’s revolutionary, attractive, intelligent, and seems morally upright is rare,” Lorenz expressed in a CNN interview. She also criticized mainstream media for oversimplifying the narrative surrounding Mangione.

“It’s amusing to see wealthy media figures reacting strongly to someone who has harmed a criminal, given that we often celebrate all sorts of criminals in our culture,” Lorenz commented. “There’s a significant gap between the perspectives pushed by certain mainstream narratives and the feelings of the American public, which becomes evident in situations like this.”
