Hasan Piker states he will hold Talarico responsible to the far left if he wins in Texas.

Far-left streamer Hasan Piker has sparked controversy on social media after urging Texas Senate candidate James Talarico to “play ball” by embracing leftist governance if he wins in the upcoming midterm elections. Talarico is attempting to become the first Democrat to secure a Senate seat in Texas in over thirty years and has shifted certain radical positions in favor of a more moderate campaign approach.

Piker, who became well-known through his association with socialist Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, seems to expect Talarico to switch gears if elected this November. He stated, “Hopefully, after James Talarico wins, we’ve got to hold him to account. We’ve got to make sure that he doesn’t become another, ‘do nothing Democrat’…” and emphasized the need for ongoing pressure on him.

As his campaign has evolved, Talarico has distanced himself from some of his more polarizing assertions, like his comment on the non-binary nature of God. Nevertheless, he continues to support progressive ideas such as universal healthcare, claiming these beliefs are rooted in “biblical grounds.”

Piker’s comments have opened a floodgate of criticism from Republicans, including Talarico’s rival, GOP nominee Ken Paxton, and Senator Ted Cruz. They argue that Piker’s remarks expose Talarico’s alignment with the more extreme elements of his party, potentially pressuring him in the Senate. Paxton remarked that Talarico is “bought and paid for” by the Democratic Socialists and suggested that, if elected, Talarico would raise taxes to fund radical initiatives.

Cruz echoed this sentiment, stating, “When they tell you who they are… believe them.” Other Republican voices echoed similar concerns, asserting that Talarico would merely serve as a “puppet” for the radical left according to Rep. Brandon Gill.

Piker’s reputation has faced scrutiny recently, particularly following controversial statements he made in the past, like asserting that “America deserved 9/11.” Some Democrats, including El-Sayed, have sought to distance themselves from him as his remarks continue to draw backlash.

Critics have taken to social media to dissect Piker’s influence on Talarico’s campaign, arguing it raises questions about Talarico’s potential governance style. Some users characterized Piker as a leading voice of the radical left, with concerns that he influences not just Talarico but the broader Democratic agenda. While others argue that it’s irrelevant to Talarico’s message and that he should represent the interests of Texas voters without being beholden to the more extreme factions of the party.

Talarico’s campaign has not yet commented on Piker’s remarks or their implications as the election date approaches.
