Sen. Hawley Pushes for Stricter Vetting of Afghan Refugees
Senator Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) is revisiting a legislative proposal aimed at enhancing the screening processes for Afghan refugees who arrived in the United States following the U.S. troop withdrawal in 2021. This initiative, known as the Afghanistan Review and Accountability Act, was initially introduced shortly after Hawley’s visit to the UK but did not succeed in Parliament.
The bill mandates that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirm both biometric and personal details of all evacuees from Afghanistan and conduct in-person interviews for vetting. Additionally, it would terminate federal assistance for those evacuees who haven’t undergone this screening process and requires DHS to submit quarterly reports to Congress regarding the status of these vetting efforts.
“Joe Biden not only mismanaged our exit from Afghanistan, but he also jeopardized American safety by permitting tens of thousands of refugees to enter the country without adequate vetting,” Hawley expressed in a statement. “This bill aims to build upon the framework established by President Trump: ensuring that we safeguard our heroes and only allow individuals who don’t pose a risk to our citizens into our nation.”
The renewed legislation comes in light of a tragic incident involving an Afghan refugee who was allegedly involved in the fatal shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C. One of the victims, Sarah Beckström, has succumbed to her injuries, while the other, Andrew Wolfe, is reported to be in critical condition.
The accused in this case, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Rakanwal, is facing serious charges including first-degree murder and armed assault with intent to kill. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the Justice Department intends to seek the death penalty for Rakanwal, who entered the U.S. through what has been criticized as a flawed vetting process called Operation Welcoming Allies.
During the same week, another Afghan national, Mohammad Dawood Alokozai, was arrested for posting a TikTok video regarding bomb-making aimed at the Fort Worth area. Like Rakanwal, Alokozai also entered the U.S. under the Biden administration’s resettlement program.
