Hayden Panettiere Opens Up About Custody Decision

Hayden Panettiere is sharing what she describes as the hardest choice she’s had to make as a mother. In her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” the Nashville actress talks about relinquishing full custody of her daughter Kaya to her ex-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko. It’s been noted that Kaya has lived with her father since 2018.

“If that’s what I wanted…I knew how difficult my situation was,” she remarked, emphasizing that she kept her struggles hidden from her daughter as best as she could.

Panettiere explained that witnessing Kaya thrive in a stable environment in Europe led her to prioritize her daughter’s well-being over her own desires. “I thought, ‘If I start a war over this, it’s going to permanently damage my child. It’s going to be incredibly public. She has two very famous parents, and it’s going to get ugly,’” she reflected. Ultimately, she decided it was better to let Kaya grow up with support, adding, “I know she’s safe and well cared for. She’s had a great life, and I hoped one day she would come back to me.”

The actress acknowledged her struggles, saying, “I tried to numb myself… It’s been very challenging to process that pain.” Not being under the same roof as Kaya felt like “the most gut-wrenching experience of my life.” Panettiere expressed, “I miss Kaya so much, but my heart aches. I know how blessed I am to be her mother.”

She mentioned that filming “Nashville” during a hard pregnancy played a significant role in her character’s storyline. The pregnancy included numerous health scares that were notably distressing. During one episode, doctors found an abnormality that raised concerns about Kaya’s development.

Panettiere faced a near-fatal birth experience that involved a C-section gone wrong, leading to emergency surgery. “I almost died,” she recalled, adding that the struggle to bond with her daughter began during her recovery. “Hearing friends’ experiences really helped,” she noted. Initially, she underestimated her feelings, thinking they were just “baby blues,” only to realize later that they were far deeper.

She self-medicated with alcohol, especially after the birth. “When Kaya was four months old, I sought help as I realized my drinking was spiraling out of control,” she admitted. This led to a diagnosis of postpartum depression, with medication leaving her feeling numb. “Waking up every morning thinking about drinking is a problem,” she mused.

Panettiere’s relationship with Klitschko grew strained as she battled her personal demons. In 2018, he sought full custody due to worries about Kaya’s welfare while she was with Panettiere. Despite defending herself, she ultimately chose not to fight for custody. “I truly believed it was the best decision for her as I worked on rebuilding my life,” she stated.

Describing herself as “mortified” by public speculation, she emphasized that despite the difficult decision, she felt it was right for Kaya. Panettiere maintains that Kaya is thriving, learning languages, and has a solid support system. “I feel like I made the right decision. She’s a great human being,” she shared.

Today, Panettiere feels more connected to herself than ever and has expressed hope that by sharing her journey, other mothers enduring similar struggles will seek the help they need. “I feel good about myself and I’m in tune with myself,” she concluded, highlighting her aspirations for the future.
