Rep. Thomas Massey, a Republican from Kentucky, humorously suggested that President Trump changed his stance on disclosing documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein because he grew “tired of winning.”
“Well, he got tired of us winning and decided to join us,” Massey commented during a CNN appearance on Monday night.
“They could have done this months ago, but they resisted until now. Now, they want to align with us,” he added. “We accept their support.”
Despite this shift, Massey and others backing the open-files bill are still feeling “suspicious” about Trump’s sudden change of heart.
On Sunday, Trump stated that he and fellow Republicans have “nothing to hide” and dismissed concerns regarding the Epstein documents as a “Democratic hoax from some lunatics on the radical left.”
Recently, Massey made progress by adding his name to a discharge petition to prompt a vote on making Epstein-related documents public after Rep. Adelita Grijalva, a Democrat from Arizona, was sworn in.
Initially, Trump was against the vote and urged Republicans to overlook the bill, but he later expressed support for it and stated he would sign it, although its success in the Senate remains uncertain.
This development follows Trump’s directive to the Department of Justice to investigate potential connections between Democrats and disgraced financiers.
Co-sponsor of the bill, Rep. Ro Khanna from California, urged Congress members to back efforts to create transparency for the sake of justice for victims.
“The President said he would sign the Epstein File Transparency Act that I introduced and @RepThomasMassie led the release petition,” Khanna said in a statement, mentioning that “the swamp is trying to get it fixed in the Senate” on social media platform X.
Khanna further stated, “Anyone who tries to amend a bill that the president says he will sign is a betrayal of survivors.”
