Spiritual Renewal in East Point, Florida, Inmates
For some inmates in East Point, Florida, prison has turned into a space for spiritual growth and connecting with their faith.
A chaplain at Franklin County Jail noted that a group of 14 inmates — four women and ten men — wanted to be baptized, and an event was organized for Thursday to fulfill that wish.
For Ethan Vonnier, a relationship with Jesus Christ has given him a sense of purpose as he anticipates his release. “I plan to do the right thing and keep God in my thoughts when I get out. I have to head home on the 14th to take care of my little son,” he shared. “I found Christ in prison. I believe the good Lord put me here, and we’re all improving every single day.”
The inmates partake in Bible studies and listen to sermons from local pastors. Charles Burns, another inmate, expressed his hopes for the future: “My aim is to get out, provide for my kids, and be a good father. I want to stay away from drugs, go to church, and keep making positive choices,” he said.
Robert Hill quoted Jeremiah 29:11 from the Bible, which states, “For I know the plans I have for you.” He expressed his belief that God has a purpose for him, saying, “I know God has a plan for me. I want it, and I’m determined to achieve it.”
This news arrives alongside reports that Bible sales have surged and that more young people in the U.S. are converting to Christianity. “In recent years, thousands have gathered for Christian revival and baptism events nationwide,” according to media reports.
In a similar instance, 18 inmates were baptized in August at a Kentucky prison following the expansion of a gospel outreach initiative by Warden Jody Perry at the LaRue County Detention Center. “Today reflects the fruits of our efforts. The weather was absolutely perfect,” Perry remarked, adding, “Our mission is to reintroduce better citizens to society. What better citizens could there be than Christians?”
Awakening of faith appears to be occurring beyond prison walls as well, as evidenced by a church in Georgia that recently conducted 400 unplanned baptisms in a single day.
