Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “The Chris Jansing Report” that former President Donald Trump won’t rely on crowd cheers in the upcoming presidential debate with President Joe Biden. He said he couldn’t do it.
Moderator Stephanie Ruhl said, “There’s talk today about a presidential debate being held as early as June. I know the debate was important to you. Do you think they’re important today? In many ways, we know a lot about the two of them running. Do you think that will influence the vote? Do you think it will affect your vote?
“The image that comes to mind is the two old men sitting in the back of The Muppets,” Romney said.
The rule said, “Strutler and Steiner.”
“Statler and Waldorf, that comes to mind,” Romney said. “But the reality is, I think these discussions are going to have a large audience. People’s expectations of what President Biden will do are very low.” I think they have much higher expectations for President Trump and his competitiveness.”
Mr. Ruhl said, “What do you expect?”
“We’ll see what happens,” Romney said. “I’ve had interactions with President Biden, and I feel like we’ve had good interactions. He’s competent. I like the guy. I know. I watch his rallies and he seems energetic and strong, but rallies are easy in a way, with cheering crowds and teleprompters to read. I don’t know the answer, but I think America is paying attention.”
