(NEXSTAR) – The government has issued a public health warning regarding potentially mislabeled frozen mushroom products being sold in nearly a dozen states that could be dangerous to people with allergies.
Although the outside of the box says “Wild Fork Porcini Mushroom Risotto Bites,” consumers may actually find hot dogs inside the puff pastry, according to USDA Food Safety Inspection. Announced by FSIS. news release Friday. According to FSIS, sesame seeds, a known allergen and an ingredient found in puff pastry, are not listed on the packaging.
The 7.5-ounce cardboard boxes were shipped to retailers in California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.
If you think you have a box of these in your freezer, check to see if the lot code is 101231 and the “best by” date is October 11, 2024 and Eastern Standard Time. 39896 is written on the side of the box. In that case, FSIS recommends that you discard them or return them to the store where you purchased them.
FSIS says there is no recall because this product is no longer on sale, but they decided to warn consumers because this product may still be in many people's freezers.
FSIS said there were no reports of adverse reactions as of Friday.
Exposure to the seeds can cause immune system reactions that range from mild, such as an outbreak of hives, to severe, including anaphylaxis.
sesame declared 9th major food allergen in the United States as part of the Food Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act of 2021, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Effective January 1, 2023, FDA regulations including labeling and manufacturing requirements regarding sesame seeds and major allergens went into effect.
