Investigation of Suspected Botulism Cases Linked to Cosmetic Injections
Four suspected cases of botulism associated with cosmetic injections are under investigation in the South Shore, as reported by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. These cases are connected to cosmetic botulinum toxin, often referred to as Botox, which is used extensively to minimize wrinkles and fine lines.
The advisory from the Massachusetts DPH stated, “While generally safe when administered by trained professionals, improper dosing, administration technique, or use of non-FDA-approved products may increase the risk of systemic botulism symptoms.” Botulism, though rare, can sometimes be fatal and is caused by botulinum toxin.
Initial symptoms of botulism may include double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty breathing. These symptoms can progress to a symmetric muscle weakness that intensifies over hours to days.
Individuals experiencing any of these symptoms are urged to seek emergency medical attention immediately.
