France Faces Historic Heatwave Death Toll

France has reported over 5,700 excess deaths related to an intense summer heatwave, the highest number for the country in over two decades, according to the French public health agency. This alarming statistic was revealed on Wednesday, highlighting the severe impact of the heat.

From June 17 to July 2, about 15,910 fatalities were expected. However, the actual tally reached 21,674, leading to a staggering 5,764 excess deaths—36% more than anticipated.

During this period, temperatures exceeded 104 degrees Fahrenheit in various parts of France, making it a particularly brutal heatwave. The agency noted that this event was unprecedented, marked by its early start, extreme intensity, and prolonged duration. Nearly the entire population experienced severe heat during this time, which coincided with significant school and work schedules.

Sadly, mortality rates rose across hospitals, private residences, and nursing facilities. The analysis focused on individuals aged 15 and older, revealing that the mortality rates began increasing notably from age 45, with adults aged 75 and up accounting for about two-thirds of the excess deaths, totaling at least 3,719 fatalities.

The Paris region was especially hard-hit, experiencing 1,999 excess deaths—more than 80% higher than what would have normally been expected. The public health agency warned that 2026 would see the nation’s highest heatwave-related mortality rates since 2003, estimating an increase of around 15,000 deaths compared to the typical death rate for that timeframe.

During this heatwave, the hottest days were recorded on June 24 and 25, where the national average soared to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, with many areas exceeding the 104-degree mark. Over half of the excess deaths, approximately 56%, occurred during the peak period from June 25 to June 27.

Officials also mentioned that more than 10,000 excess deaths were documented throughout Europe at the height of the heatwave, though this figure is likely to see updates in the coming weeks.

Funeral directors in Paris reported facing overwhelming challenges, with morgues reaching capacity and struggling to accommodate the influx of bodies awaiting burial or cremation. The estimate for excess deaths encompasses all causes occurring during the heatwave, and officials anticipate future revisions to these numbers as more data becomes available.
