DeCarlos Brown Jr. Court Hearing Postponed
DeCarlos Brown Jr., who faces charges related to a fatal incident on the light rail in Charlotte, North Carolina, had an important court hearing scheduled, but it has now been delayed. This decision was confirmed by court records.
The hearing, initially set for Thursday, aimed to assess whether the state would pursue the death penalty in the case of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Irina Zalutka. As per the Mecklenburg Superior Court records, the hearing has been moved to April 2026, though the rationale for this postponement hasn’t been detailed in the documents. I wonder what could have prompted such a delay.
The change in schedule was reportedly requested by Brown and his attorney, Daniel Roberts.
North Carolina Republican Representative Mark Harris expressed his disapproval of the delay via a post on X, questioning why the hearing had been postponed. He pointedly asked, “Is pro-crime Democrats justice for slow-moving Irina Zalutka?” It seems there’s a lot of public concern surrounding this case.
In January 2025, Brown was arrested in connection with suspected 911 misuse. Authorities claimed that he had been influenced by an “artificial” substance affecting his behavior. Brown’s mother voiced her concerns, asserting that he should not be released back into the community, citing both mental health issues and his prior arrests.
Interestingly, it appears that both his father and brother have criminal backgrounds as well. His brother, Stacey Brown, is currently serving a lengthy sentence due to murder and other charges, while DeCarlos Brown Sr. has a history of theft and weapon offenses spanning from 1990 to 2014. DeCarlos Jr. himself has been in trouble with the law numerous times, too.
In a notable development, the Department of Justice intervened in this case last month, filing federal charges against Brown. These charges include allegations of causing death while using public transport, which may lead to the death penalty if he is found guilty.
There are troubling details around Brown’s past. Reports indicate that he was released on no-cash bail earlier this year, despite being diagnosed with schizophrenia. He apparently called 911 claiming that something inside him was controlling his actions. It’s baffling how he was allowed to go free under such circumstances.
On August 22, a video surfaced showing Brown stabbing Zalutka. Eyewitnesses reported disturbing statements he allegedly made during the incident, expressing a sense of pride. The audio from 911 calls has also been made public, revealing the chaos and terror experienced as Zalutka suffered from her injuries.
