‘Heartbroken’ Jane Fonda reacts to ex Donald Sutherland’s death

Jane Fonda is “heartbroken” over the death of ex-husband Donald Sutherland.

“Stunned to hear of the passing of Donald Sutherland,” Fonda, 86, wrote on Instagram. “He was my fascinating co-star in Klute and a joy to work with.

“Donald was a brilliant actor and a complex human being who shared many adventures with me, including the 1971 anti-Vietnam War tour and FTA show in front of 60,000 active duty soldiers, sailors and Marines in Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines and Japan,” she continued. “It breaks my heart.”

The Oscar winner’s emotional post included a photo of herself and Sutherland on the set of Klute with director Alan Pakula.

Fonda and Sutherland played Bree Daniels and John Klute, respectively, in the 1971 film, a role for which Fonda won her first Academy Award.

The two dated at the time, and Fonda spoke glowingly of the “old-fashioned gentleman” in her 2006 memoir, “My Life So Far.”

She praised Sutherland’s “tall, spirited air” in the book and said his “droopy, pale blue eyes are particularly appealing.”

“My relationship fell apart in Tokyo and it was heartbreaking,” he recalls. “It was heartbreaking. I was so sad. We had a great relationship before we moved in together.”

The duration of their romance is unclear, but the Emmy Award winner’s son, Kiefer Sutherland, was asked about the couple in 2006, as well as the divorce of his father and mother, Shirley Douglas.

“He’ll probably say, ‘I fell in love,’ and I get that. That’s what people think,” the 57-year-old says. He told Rolling Stone magazine “When they fall in love, they believe everything so strongly and passionately and it’s such an uplifting experience that it’s very hard to judge someone for that.”

Kiefer broke the news of Donald’s death. Tweetcalled his late father “one of the most important actors in the history of cinema.”

He concluded: “He loved his job and did what he loved. You couldn’t ask for anything more. It was a life well lived.”

Donald is survived by his wife Francine Racette, his twin sister Rachel Sutherland, and their three sons, Rogue Sutherland, 50, Rossif Sutherland, 45, and Angus Sutherland, 41.
