Heartbroken mother of teenager killed in NYC stabbing seeks justice for her son

A grieving mother is calling for justice for her 17-year-old son, who was fatally stabbed outside their Bronx home. Raquel, the mother of Jonathan Melo, believes her son was merely a victim of circumstance in a tragic incident.

In an emotional conversation on Wednesday, Raquel shared how her enthusiastic son had dreams of graduating high school and starting a career in real estate, hoping to give her “a break from life.” His life was unexpectedly cut short when a stranger attacked him with a knife.

“To me, it feels like he was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Raquel expressed during an interview outside her home in Soundview.

She reminisced about Jonathan’s lively nature, saying he brought joy to their household, was active, and had a passion for basketball and fitness. Their bond was meaningful to him, and he deeply valued his family.

Police reported that Melo, the second oldest of four siblings, was found with a critical stab wound to his back outside a building on Beach Avenue shortly after 4:30 p.m. He was quickly transported to New York City Health Hospital/Jacobi, where he later died.

Raquel mentioned that he had been in surgery for around half an hour before he succumbed to his injuries.

The motive behind the deadly assault stems from an argument, but the initial cause isn’t known, and authorities confirmed that Melo and the suspect were unfamiliar with each other.

“This was an incredibly barbaric act,” said the devastated mother, who is determined to advocate for her son. “I will keep speaking out about him to counter any false narratives. People should know that good kids can come from the Bronx, and he was one of them.”

Raquel is still awaiting more information as the investigation into the stabbing continues.

Her family is also working to raise funds for Jonathan’s funeral.

No arrests have been made in connection with the case.
