Game Postponed Due to Court Conditions
The matchup between the Bulls and the Heat that was supposed to happen on Thursday ended up being postponed. This unexpected change came after nearly two hours of waiting at Chicago’s United Center, where officials decided to call it off due to condensation on the court. Arena staff had attempted to dry the surface using mops and towels, but it just wasn’t enough.
Officials stated that they were dealing with “court situations” as the key reason for the postponement. When the announcement was made around 8:53 p.m., the crowd responded with boos, clearly disappointed.
“Tonight’s game has been officially postponed due to court conditions,” the Bulls announced. They also mentioned that the game would be rescheduled, and tickets purchased for the original date would still be valid. They apologized for any inconvenience that this may have caused.
According to reports, players from both teams had noticed the slippery conditions early on. It seems the humidity from the outside coupled with the opening of doors added to the issue, which made the court even more treacherous.
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented on the situation, mentioning that both teams were unhappy with postponing the game. “We always want to go, but staff came out and immediately felt it was unplayable,” he explained.
Although rare, incidents like this do occur in the NBA. A similar situation happened back in the 2009-10 season at TD Garden during a matchup between the Celtics and the Clippers. That game, which the Celtics ended up winning, also faced delays due to condensation.
Doc Rivers, then-coach of the Celtics, recalled a previous incident from the 1990-91 season involving the Hawks, which was postponed for the same reason. He mentioned that fans at the time thought it was quite unfair when the game was eventually called off after the Celtics had a significant lead.
