Heather Gay discusses the double standard following her 30-pound weight loss journey

Heather Gay Reflects on Weight Loss and Society’s Expectations

Heather Gay understands the effort it takes to keep up appearances, whether on screen, through her beauty business, or from her past in the Mormon Church. Yet, the “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” star was caught off guard by how her treatment changed after she lost 30 pounds using weight loss shots. In seeking a healthier version of herself, Gay revealed that the GLP-1 treatment has shifted her relationship with food and body image.

“For the first time, I feel like I have some control over something that’s always bothered me,” she shared. Despite this, some critics still tried to define her based on her size. She elaborated, “When I was heavier, my outspoken ways were viewed humorously. Post-weight loss, my straightforwardness apparently became a reason for outrage.”

Double Standards of Weight and Perception

Gay’s publicist emphasized that losing weight didn’t change who she fundamentally is. “People are acting like I’m an entirely new person,” she noted. “I still enjoy the same foods, activities, and friendships. The only thing that’s different is my pants size.” She then remarked on the irony that, during her journey, while she received affirmation for her weight loss, the negative perceptions of her body had not vanished.

“I used to harbor negative thoughts about my appearance, yet now I’m met with a flood of positivity from others,” Gay stated. She’s accustomed to presenting a strong demeanor while advocating against the doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Growing up in the church, the notion of “attainable perfection” was instilled in her. “In our culture, we strive for beauty and the ideal lifestyle, akin to what we see on social media. Women, in particular, face immense pressure to conform,” she expressed. “In such a patriarchal environment, it feels like beauty is the key to power. If that’s not something you excel at, it can be discouraging.” She also observed a surprising shift in how people celebrated her weight loss compared to her struggles shifting away from the church.

“It’s kind of fascinating—everyone seems to cheer for weight loss. When I decided to embrace health and drop pounds, the crowd was on my side,” Gay reflected. “But when I opt to move away from harmful beliefs, the reaction can be quite different.” She pointed to the contradictions in societal attitudes toward weight and the pressures to appear a certain way.

As a mother of three, Gay emphasizes the importance of open dialogue regarding beauty standards with her daughters. “I want them to appreciate their bodies for what they can do and focus on health rather than appearance,” she mentioned. “For much of my life, I felt perceived as overweight, yet I never defined myself by my weight alone. I recognized the external expectations but felt compelled to shed that weight to set a healthier example for my daughters.”

Through her journey, Gay aims to redefine beauty standards and encourage a healthier relationship with food, noting that she still relishes tasty snacks and treats while maintaining her health. “With accessible choices at home, we don’t have to ask if we need a protein shake—we can just reach for what we enjoy,” she said.
