Ryder Cup Drama: McMahan Steps Down After Controversial Chant
Team USA faced a challenging weekend at the Ryder Cup, but it wasn’t entirely smooth sailing. Comedian Heather McMahan, who had taken on the role of the first tee host at Bethpage Black, decided to step down after being caught on video leading the “F-K You, Rory” chants aimed at Rory McIlroy.
The PGA of America announced on Sunday that McMahan would not be returning for the final day of the tournament. “Heather McMahan has extended her apologies to Rory McIlroy and Ryder Cup Europe, and has resigned from her role,” the statement read.
McIlroy had his own challenges, dealing with rowdy fans during his play. Early on Saturday, as he was preparing to take his shot, he had to ask the crowd to quiet down—a situation he faced multiple times on the fourth green.
“I mean, what do you expect at an away Ryder Cup?” McIlroy remarked to reporters. “It’s tough when fans are yelling while you’re trying to concentrate.”
According to reports, two spectators were removed by New York State Police. The PGA also increased security measures and displayed messages about “Spectator Etiquette” around the course.
The atmosphere at Bethpage was intense, but it didn’t significantly hinder Team USA’s performance. They entered Sunday with a commanding 11.5-4.5 lead, poised for what many hoped would be a historic victory on home turf.
