Heather McMahan Responds After Ryder Cup Resignation
Heather McMahan has finally broken her silence following her resignation from hosting duties at the Ryder Cup this past weekend. The incident came after she was caught on video chanting “F-K You, Rory” with the crowd, aimed at Team Europe star Rory McIlroy before the start of the second day’s matches.
McIlroy, hailing from Northern Ireland, faced quite a few unkind remarks from fans at Beth Page Black on Long Island over the weekend.
During her hosting duties, McMahan was shown in a widely circulated video trying to lead a chant for American golfer Bryson DeChambeau before it morphed into the offensive “F-K You, Rory.” Responding to backlash on TikTok, she described the criticism as akin to a “Salem witch hunt.”
“It was a really tough scene,” McMahan remarked on a post by influencer Pamela Worst Vutoni, who was defending her. “I didn’t initiate the chant, but I regret going back to the crowd and engaging. I apologized, but I believe this is a bit like a Salem witch denunciation in the New York sports scene.”
The PGA of America announced early Sunday that McMahan had resigned and expressed apologies to McIlroy and Team Europe.
McIlroy, alongside his wife Erica, emphasized that the incident became one of the major stories of the Ryder Cup, especially given the golfers’ interactions with fans after Team Europe clinched the victory. He asserted, “I don’t think we should accept that in golf. Golf should be held to a higher standard than what we witnessed this week. It has the potential to bring people together, teaching good life lessons and etiquette along the way.” He also added, “I didn’t observe that as much this week, so this shouldn’t be something condoned at the Ryder Cup.”
