A severe heatwave is on track to break records next week.

“Unfortunately, it’s going to be extremely humid along with the heat,” noted Stephanie Van Oppen, a meteorologist. “It’s the kind of air that feels like you’re trudging through a swimming pool. It just sticks to you—it’s so uncomfortable.”

Temperatures hit 100 degrees on Monday and reached 102 degrees on Tuesday. With dew points forecasted to be in the ’60s or ’70s, the city could break its longstanding records from 137 years ago on June 23 and June 24, Van Oppen mentioned.

The previous records for these dates are set at 96 degrees in Central Park back in 1888.

“It’s certainly risky for people to spend too much time outdoors,” she cautioned, suggesting that it could feel as hot as 105 degrees. “Next week is going to be really intense.”

This extreme heat may influence turnout for Tuesday’s Democratic mayoral primary—especially among older voters, many of whom support former governor Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo garnered 42% of first-choice votes from individuals over 50 in a recent Siena University poll in collaboration with the American Association of Retirees.

New Yorkers are advised to head to the polls dressed in light, breathable clothing, stay hydrated, and seek shade, according to Van Oppen.

“When you’re waiting to vote, look for a shaded area,” she suggested. “I’ve noticed a lot of people on the subway using personal fans, which is an option too.”

In the meantime, Governor Kathy Hochul issued an “extreme heat” warning on Friday across much of the state, labeling it “the top cause of weather-related deaths,” and urged residents to take precautions.

As for the weekend, temperatures are expected to be a bit milder, with a partially sunny high of 88 degrees on Saturday and 97 degrees on Sunday.
