Heated Exchange at Pentagon Budget Hearing

During a Senate hearing on the Pentagon’s budget for the ongoing war in Iran, Army Secretary Pete Hegseth and Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) had a contentious exchange. Hegseth accused Peters and other Democrats of suffering from “Trump derangement syndrome,” while Peters criticized Hegseth as a “failure.”

Hegseth provided testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee alongside Gen. Dan Kaine, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He pushed for an increase in military funding for operations in the Middle East, estimating that the war has cost $37.5 billion since it began in February. Meanwhile, Congressional Republicans are preparing a $95 billion funding bill.

The White House’s proposal not only seeks military funding but also includes $10 billion for agricultural assistance and another $10 billion for voting reforms. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins joined Hegseth and Kaine at the hearing to discuss these agricultural aid measures.

As the questioning progressed, Hegseth confronted Peters about the condition of the Strait of Hormuz, noting it was open prior to the war but remains closed now. Peters responded by recalling that lower prices for everyone existed before the conflict. He tragically mentioned the loss of service members, prompting him to ask, “So, what’s the difference, Secretary?”

“I think calling this significant effort a failure is reckless and irresponsible,” Hegseth retorted, emphasizing the sacrifices made by American military personnel to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Peters shot back, expressing frustration over anyone who would deem this a quagmire while also supporting militants. He questioned whether Iran still possessed nuclear material. Hegseth countered, inviting Peters to visit CENTCOM to see firsthand the commitment of American forces in the region.

“Our fighters are passionately focused on ensuring that Iran doesn’t present a nuclear threat,” Hegseth declared.

Peters contended that he had already made his views on American fighters clear, which led Hegseth to cite Peters branding them as “failures.” Peters clarified, “I used that term regarding their leaders. You, sir, are the failure, not those on the front lines.” He criticized the lack of a successful strategy, emphasizing the risks for American troops.

The exchange escalated as Peters insisted that there was no long-term plan to win the war. “When will you show leadership?” he urged Hegseth, who shot back about Peters’ apparent inability to support military funding due to partisan politics.

“You have over $1 trillion. It’s not about money,” Peters replied, emphasizing that leadership is what’s truly needed. Hegseth countered by accusing Democrats of political cowardice for failing to support military funding adequately.
