Strategic Ambiguity and Pizza Orders at the Pentagon
In Washington, Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth is looking to increase pizza orders at the Pentagon. This strategy aims to confuse those closely monitoring military movements through pizza delivery data.
A popular account on X, called “Pentagon Pizza Report,” leverages open-source information to analyze pizza deliveries around U.S. military sites, thereby attempting to forecast significant geopolitical occurrences.
Hegseth acknowledged knowing about the account during an interview with Peter Doocy, a former colleague at Fox News. He jokingly remarked that instead of just opting for cafeteria food, he thought it would be amusing to order lots of pizza to keep people guessing.
He noted, “If there’s a big Domino’s order on a Friday night, it could just be me playing with the app. We’re trying to keep everyone off-balance and monitor everything happening around us.”
Hegseth, a supporter of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s initiative “Make America Healthy Again,” has even stated that it’s “unacceptable” for a general to be overweight and has pushed for stricter fitness standards.
On January 3, the Pentagon Pizza Report highlighted a significant increase in order activity at Pizato Pizza, located just minutes from the Pentagon. This spike coincided with U.S. Army Delta Force’s Operation Absolute Determination, which aimed to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
Although crucial details about the operation had reached several news publications, including the New York Times and the Washington Post, they opted not to publish them beforehand out of concern for the safety of U.S. soldiers.
Since launching in 2024, the Pentagon Pizza Report has recorded numerous pizza spikes unrelated to major military activities. The initiative uses Google Maps data to track increased business at nearby pizza establishments.
For instance, on June 12, 2025, as Israel commenced its military action against Iran, the report noted a surge in pizza orders near the Pentagon. Nine days later, the U.S. executed airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear sites.
Hegseth emphasized, “We examine every sign. That’s how operations like Midnight Hammer succeeded. By understanding public observations and monitoring activities.”
He added that the military possesses unique capabilities, making it a serious responsibility to ensure proper leadership within its ranks.
The intrigue surrounding national security agencies and pizza consumption is not a new phenomenon. In the 1990s, Domino’s franchise owner Frank Meeks garnered attention after revealing that twenty-one pizzas had been delivered to the CIA right before Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, marking the onset of the Gulf War.
