On Monday, Heggs signed a memo instructing the U.S. Army to rename the North Carolina base to “Fort Bragg.” However, this time it is named after Roland L. Bragg, a World War II hero who won Silver Star and Purple Heart for his extraordinary courage in the Battle of the Bulge.
Fort Bragg was originally named after General Braxton Bragg of the Confederate Army.
“That's right. Bragg is back,” Hegseth said after signing the memo.
The military facility was renamed to 2023 as part of a massive Department of Defense campaign urged by the 2020 George Floyd protests. One of the goals was to rename the military facility, named after Confederate leaders.
The facility was founded in 1918 by General Braxton Bragg, the Confederate leader of Warrenton, North Carolina, owned 105 slaves, and was extremely debateful and involved in the important civil war that contributed to the Confederate defeat. was known for losing it.
Hegseth's note further explained his intention to rename the base.
“In these hellish situations and in the midst of fierce battles, the PFC. Bragg commands enemy ambulances and drives 20 miles to transport wounded warriors to the Allied hospitals in Belgium. By riding 20 miles, we saved the lives of our fellow soldiers,” the memo said.
“This directive honors the personal courage and selfless service of all those who trained to fight and win the wars of our nation, including the PFC. In line with the respected and celebratory history of Bragg and the installation. “It's done,” the memo continued.
After Vice-General Hal Moore, commander of Vietnam, various other Army posts were also renamed, along with the North Carolina base, to Fort Moore, home of the Army Infantry Academy.
Fort Hood was also converted to Fort Cabazos, named after General Richard Edward Cabazos, a four-star general who fought both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
