U.S. Defense Secretary Warns Drug Traffickers Following Airstrike

On September 3, 2025, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses made a significant announcement regarding the ongoing fight against drug trafficking in the Caribbean. He emphasized a firm stance against “narcotelorists” and reassured that the U.S. is committed to targeting major drug traffickers, particularly following a recent military strike on a Venezuelan drug boat linked to the Caribbean Tren de Aragua (TDA).

Hegses spoke on Fox News, reinforcing that the U.S. would maintain its military presence in the Caribbean and act swiftly against those involved in drug trafficking. He specified, “This is a designated narco-terrorist operation,” illustrating the urgency and seriousness of the situation.

“You want to try and change drugs, that’s a new day. Because it’s another day, these 11 drug traffickers are no longer with us, and they’re sending a very clear signal that this is not something that the U.S. would tolerate in our hemisphere,” Hegses declared.

According to President Donald Trump and military officials, the airstrikes on September 2 resulted in the deaths of 11 TDA members. Trump reinforced the narrative, stating that the military’s actions were directed at identifiable drug traffickers, labeling TDA as a foreign terrorist organization that collaborates with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is implicated in a myriad of criminal activities.

“The strike occurred when terrorists were transporting illegal drugs. The action killed 11 terrorists and did not harm U.S. troops,” Trump explained.

In response, Venezuelan Minister of Communications Freddie Nannez suggested that a video of the attack was fabricated, attributing it to “AI.” Hegses challenged this assertion, asserting, “I can say that it was definitely not artificial intelligence. I saw it live. We knew exactly who was on that boat, we knew exactly what they were doing.”

This airstrike aligned with Trump’s previous order aimed at combatting Latin American drug cartels, intended to reduce the influx of illegal drugs into the U.S.

“This is a fatal and serious mission for us, and this strike alone won’t stop,” Hegses continued. “Those trafficked in those waters will face the same fate of being labeled narcoterrorists.”

In a show of military might, Maduro announced the deployment of warships along the Venezuelan coast, condemning the U.S. strike as “a luxurious, unjust, immoral, absolutely criminal and bloody threat.”

Trump maintains that Maduro’s collaboration with drug trafficking groups has escalated tensions between the two countries. As part of the U.S. response, Attorney General Pam Bondy had previously indicated a $50 million reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest.

When asked if the U.S. would consider efforts to change the government in Venezuela, Hegses pointed out the demonstration of military power in the Caribbean, implying that decisions regarding governance ultimately lie with the Venezuelan leadership.

“What we have is a clear demonstration of military power,” Hegses stated. “President Trump has shown that precise force can affect and change dynamics around the world.”
