Hegseth reveals joint task force between the Pentagon and DOJ aimed at government press leaks

Pentagon and DOJ Unite Against Leaks

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has announced a new initiative between the Pentagon and the Department of Justice to tackle the issue of leaking sensitive government information. This joint task force aims to identify and prosecute those responsible for such breaches.

According to Hegseth, the Office of General Counsel in the War Department will have the authority to request all pertinent information and records regarding leaks from the Pentagon. He emphasized the importance for all department entities to respond quickly to these requests, ideally within two days.

In a recent statement on X, Hegseth detailed the group’s mission, highlighting the risks associated with leaking sensitive information, which could jeopardize the safety of American service members and necessitate legal action.

“To leak sensitive national defense information is to betray our warriors and put them in danger,” Hegseth stated on X. “That’s why the Department of War and the DOJ have created a joint task force to identify and prosecute leakers.”

In his video address, Hegseth noted that this collaboration will help both agencies work more efficiently, unraveling leaks much faster than if they operated separately.

“When a leak of department information occurs today, it is critical that we provide the Department of Justice and other partners in federal law enforcement— including the FBI— with actionable information as quickly as possible,” he said. “That’s why the Department of War and the Department of Justice have created a joint task force to identify and prosecute leakers.”

Hegseth expressed gratitude to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, emphasizing the unprecedented level of cooperation between their departments.

He went on to stress that leaks pose serious risks: “These new tools and processes will greatly assist us in protecting our joint force. The security of our nation cannot be a bargaining chip for those who seek momentary headlines. Access to confidential and secret information is a sacred trust. Those who betray that trust will face the full force of the law,” he concluded.
