Hegseth: The initial trial of the Golden Dome Defense system was successful

Golden Dome Defense System Passes First Test

The recently launched Golden Dome Defense system successfully completed its first test, as reported by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. This testing phase involved the system neutralizing multiple threats, reaffirming that the initiative to protect U.S. soil is progressing well, according to a social media update shared on Tuesday.

“Advanced directed energy was effectively utilized, with the Dynamic Defense Autonomous Defeat (DDAD) system accurately identifying and eliminating various incoming threats. The test adhered to schedule and successfully neutralized each threat,” Hegseth stated.

“I observed our skilled military personnel merge their efforts with state-of-the-art technology to intercept drones and cruise missiles swiftly,” he added.

In January 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order mandating the creation of this defense project, which was initially referred to as the Iron Dome for America.

“The potential for attacks involving ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles, alongside advanced aerial assaults, remains a critical risk for the United States,” the executive order emphasized.

Funding for the Golden Dome initiative started with the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) passed the previous summer, with additional resources allocated since then. Hegseth noted that this system builds upon President Ronald Reagan’s vision for homeland defense against missile attacks.

“President Trump is realizing President Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) vision,” Hegseth remarked. “With the Golden Dome, the War Department is equipped to defend our homeland with unprecedented strength. It’s real, powerful, and progressing as planned.”

Industry sources estimate the project could cost about $185 billion, with the Congressional Budget Office predicting that development and operations over the next two decades might reach around $1.2 trillion. However, due to insufficient logistical information regarding the project, the CBO mentioned that deriving an accurate long-term cost for the Golden Dome system was impractical and their estimates were based on a conceptual national missile defense system.
