Heidi Gardner is departing from 'SNL' for this reason

Changes are afoot.

Heidi Gardner, who has been a fixture on Saturday Night Live for the past eight seasons, will not be returning for Season 51. Reports indicate that her contract wasn’t renewed, signaling perhaps a shift in direction for the iconic show.

“It’s a good time for a new cast,” a source commented.

At 42, Gardner was the longest-serving female cast member before her departure, which has come as a surprise. Some of her standout moments include her sketches as a character in a Ryan Gosling parody and as “Abby,” Travis Kelce’s ex-girlfriend.

Her memorable roles also featured characters like Angel, the boxer’s girlfriend, and Bailey Gismart, a Gen Z film critic.

As of now, Gardner hasn’t publicly addressed her exit. Her representative has not provided any comments regarding her departure.

Recently, Dana Carvey discussed Gardner’s exit during a podcast with David Spade, suggesting that the decision may not have been hers. “From what I understand, it wasn’t really her choice,” Carvey mentioned. He expressed surprise at the news, given her strong skills and good reputation.

Gardner is among four cast members not returning next season, alongside Michael Longfellow, Emile Wakim, and Devon Walker. In contrast, five new members have been added to the cast, including Tommy Brennan and Veronica Slow Eccasca.

In August, Lorne Michaels, the show’s creator, hinted at significant changes for the upcoming season, noting the pressure to reinvent the series.

Walker, who departed after three seasons, reflected on the situation in an interview, stating that it felt mutual—like both he and the show were ready to move on. He previously described his time on SNL as having both cool moments and difficult ones, ultimately describing it as somewhat “toxic.” Despite that, he noted that they managed to make the best of it.

As for Gardner, she remains quiet about her future plans or thoughts following her SNL journey.
