Heisman Trophy forecasts: Indiana grad rallies backing for Fernando Mendoza

Fernando Mendoza Shines as Indiana Hoosiers Quarterback

Indiana Hoosiers quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, is emerging as one of the standout players in college football this season, as the Big Ten school looks to wrap up a perfect regular season. This is Mendoza’s first year with Indiana after transferring from Cal State, and he has already amassed an impressive 2,641 passing yards. Notably, he’s tied for the most touchdown passes in the nation with 30. Some experts, including analysts from FOX Sports, consider him a frontrunner for this year’s Heisman Trophy as they head into the regular season finale against Purdue.

Trent Green, an Indiana University alum, has been watching Mendoza closely and is advocating for him to be recognized as a Heisman candidate. “Mendoza deserves Heisman support,” Green stated recently. He emphasized Mendoza’s growth under head coach Curt Chinetti, recalling last season’s success that led the team to the College Football Playoff where they faced off against Notre Dame.

Green mentioned a particularly thrilling game where Mendoza’s leadership proved crucial. Even though a late interception put the Hoosiers in jeopardy, Mendoza rallied his team and secured the win. In that match, he connected with wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. for a game-winning touchdown catch, showcasing a remarkable play that involved a perfectly timed toe tap.

Green continued to praise Mendoza, noting his strong character and leadership skills. “When he came from California, I didn’t know much about him. But there’s a reason the players look up to him. He possesses mental toughness,” Green remarked. “Despite facing setbacks, he bounced back each time, leading his team to victory in several close games against tough opponents like Iowa, Oregon, and Penn State.” The ability to shake off those early interceptions and drive his team to a win highlighted Mendoza’s extraordinary mental resilience paired with his talent.

Green, who was a quarterback at Indiana from 1989 to 1992, understands the demands of the position. During his college career, he threw for over 5,100 yards and recorded 31 touchdowns. His insights into Mendoza’s potential illustrate both excitement and hope for the Hoosiers as they continue their pursuit of an undefeated season.
