Helene Death Toll Closes on 100 as Supplies Rushed to Still Isolated Areas

Fresh water, fuel, food, medical supplies and other essential supplies were rushed to flood-hit areas Monday after Hurricane Helen left a trail of damage in the southeastern United States.

At least 91 people have been killed in multiple states as the mega weather event ramped up over the weekend.

Thirty people have died in the North Carolina county that includes the mountain city of Asheville, the Associated Press reported. report.

Gov. Roy Cooper predicted the death toll would rise further as rescue workers and other emergency workers arrive in areas isolated by collapsed roads, failing infrastructure and widespread flooding.

The Associated Press also reported that supplies were being airlifted to areas around the isolated city of Asheville.

Buncombe County Mayor Avril Pinder has promised to deliver food and water to the city by Monday.

“We hear you. We need food, we need water,” Pinder said on a call with reporters Sunday.

“My staff has requested all possible assistance from the state and we have been working with every organization that has contacted us. I promise you, we are very close.”

President Joe Biden described the storm's impact as “astonishing” and said he would visit the area this week at a date yet to be determined.

As Biden waits to choose the timing of his visit, former President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit the city of Valdosta, Georgia, which was devastated by the storm.

In a press release issued Sunday, the Trump campaign said announced He plans to visit Valdosta to “receive a briefing on the damage” caused by the hurricane and “facilitate the distribution of relief supplies.”

As Breitbart News reported, Helen, downgraded from a strong Category 4 storm, made landfall in Florida's Big Bend area on Thursday night.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has warned that “catastrophic and life-threatening” flash flooding is still possible inland.
