Helicopter Crash in Central Texas Sparks Wildfire
An AH-64 Apache attack helicopter crashed into a field in central Texas on Wednesday, igniting a wildfire, prompting evacuations, and necessitating a swift response from emergency crews, according to authorities.
Cliff Coleman from the Bell County Sheriff’s Office noted that a call was received around 1:34 p.m. reporting the crash. The incident took place in a field south of Salado, approximately 30 minutes from Fort Hood, specifically off Dove Hollow Lane.
The crash was described as violent by Coleman, who confirmed the deaths of two individuals on board, with no other injuries reported. Initially believed to be affiliated with Fort Hood, the helicopter was later confirmed by the military to be an Apache helicopter based at the facility. The identities of the deceased individuals have yet to be released.
Fort Hood stated that local emergency services, military response forces, and law enforcement were on-site aiding in response efforts. “Our immediate priority is to secure the scene and support first response efforts,” said Acting Commander Gen. Ethan Dibun, who also expressed thoughts for the crew and their families as they awaited more information.
The situation remains active, with reports of road closures and evacuations in the area due to the ensuing wildfire. By around 4 p.m. ET, Coleman indicated that the fire was still not under control. Residents in the vicinity were evacuated, and Farm to Market Road 2843 was closed to traffic.
Emergency responders identified the blaze as a “large grass fire” along FM 2843 and cautioned the public about impassable routes in affected areas. The police department urged drivers to avoid the area to facilitate emergency response operations.
Fort Hood is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash, which has not yet been disclosed. Amity Republican Congressional candidate Abhiram Garapati offered prayers for those involved in the incident and for the first responders on the scene.
