Midair Collision of Helicopters in Southern New Jersey
In a tragic incident in southern New Jersey, two helicopters collided in midair, resulting in at least one fatality and another person suffering serious injuries, as reported by local sources.
The crash occurred shortly before noon on Sunday. According to a spokesperson from Hammonton city, both helicopters managed to make emergency landings following the collision.
One of the helicopters reportedly caught fire after the crash, with one individual being transported to the hospital with severe life-threatening injuries.
Details indicate that the accident took place within three miles of Hammonton Airport, as confirmed by Atlantic County Fire Department and EMS communications.
“One helicopter was fully engaged in flames. We are searching for the second one. We found another in the woods. Urgent rescue efforts needed,” a dispatcher noted during the emergency call.
An official later stated, “Two people have been confirmed injured.”
A local resident, Dan Dameshek, recounted his experience to NBC News, mentioning that while leaving the gym, he saw a helicopter fly upside down before crashing to the ground.
Dameshek also shared a video of the event, saying, “For a second, the other helicopter looked fine, but then there was a loud bang, and it started spinning wildly. That’s captured in the video.”
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed the crash, noting that only the pilot was on board at the time.
“An Enstrom F-28A helicopter and an Enstrom 280C helicopter collided midair near Hammonton Municipal Airport at around 12:25 p.m. local time,” stated the FAA.
“Both helicopters had just the pilots on board. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the incident and providing updates,” the FAA added.
